Thinking about switching broadband providers?

Finding the right provider, dealing with unexpected price hikes, and navigating complex cancellation processes can be frustrating and hard to understand.

Here, we will address common concerns regarding switching broadband providers, whether you need to cancel current broadband subscriptions before switching and how to seamlessly transition to your new broadband provider.

Do I need to tell my broadband provider I’m switching?

Sadly, the answer to whether you need to tell your broadband provider before switching isn’t as simple as yes or no.

It depends entirely on your contract type, provider, and who you are switching to.

Most providers expect you to notify them a minimum of 30 days before switching to ensure you have paid any outstanding cancellation fees if you’re switching before your contracted termination period.

However, suppose your provider is part of the Openreach network, such as BT, Vodaphone, EE, Sky or TalkTalk, and you’re switching to another Openreach-connected provider like Quickline – then the answer is no, you do not have to contact your provider.

When switching from Openreach services, you are offered a “one-stop switch” – where your new provider takes all the necessary steps to ensure a hassle-free switch. Which means no awkward cancellation calls where the person on the other side tries to convince you to stay.

However, if you live in an area that doesn’t use the Openreach network, such as parts of Hull and East Yorkshire, or you have a provider that uses its own network (like Virgin Media), you may need to tell your provider that you’re planning on making a change.

Do I need to cancel my current broadband before switching?

In most cases, you don’t need to cancel your current broadband yourself.

For those that are part of the Openreach network, such as BT, EE, Sky and TalkTalk – switching providers is even easier with the introduction of the ‘One-Stop Switch’ which came into effect during April 2023.

The ‘One-Stop Switch’ will ensure your new provider will arrange the transfer for you – so you will not have to contact your current provider at all.

While Switching providers often involves the new provider handling the cancellation of your old service as part of their ‘getting-you-onboard’ process – it’s always a good idea to confirm the specific details with your new broadband provider to ensure outstanding cancellation fees are paid.

If you’re switching to or from a provider who doesn’t use the Openreach network – such as Virgin Media, you should inform both providers about the cancellation.

Once you have informed both providers of your cancellation, your old provider will confirm that your contract is ending and explain any changes that might apply.

How hard is it to switch broadband providers?

Switching broadband providers might seem stressful and time-consuming. There’s a lot of uncertainty – not knowing what is happening, how to switch, or when your new service will arrive can be frustrating.

To make the tricky transition process a little easier, here are a few steps you can follow for a smooth service switch:

  1. Research new providers: Compare different broadband service providers to find the one that best meets your speed, reliability, pricing, and customer support needs.
  2. Contact the new provider: Reach out and inquire about their services. Provide them with the necessary details, such as your current address and the date you wish to start the new service.
  3. Check if your new provider handles cancellations: It’s always best to ask. Not all providers offer this service, so it’s important to double-check.
  4. Confirm cancellation details: If a new provider does not handle the cancellation, contact your current broadband provider, inform them of your intended switch, and pay any termination fees.
  5. Book an installation appointment: Coordinate with the new provider to schedule an installation appointment. They will usually install and activate your new broadband on the agreed-upon date.
  6. Consider overlapping services: During the transition, there might be a brief period of overlapping services, where you have both your old and new broadband connections. This overlap is generally temporary until the new service is fully functional.
  7. Return old equipment: if you have any rented equipment from your old provider, such as a modem or router, return it according to your old provider’s instructions to avoid additional charges.
